THE LESSER-KNOWN PARADISE ISLAND (Europe)

The Canary islands are super popular and they get millions and millions of visitors each year. Out of all the people going there, only one percent goes to La Gomera. A lot of the tourists come for a one day trip from Tenerife. However, this island is worth visiting and staying for at least a week. This is a super nice island that is surrounded by nature at all times. It’s a place for people that love hiking or biking and other activities in nature.   La Gomera has only recently woken up to its ‘get away from it all appeal’. The island’s haunting silence has been broken now that the hills are alive with the sound of Gore-Tex. Walkers in particular have made the most of the expansion of the fast ferry service , which can now zip them across the 32-kilometre stretch of water separating the island from its immediate neighbour, Tenerife in 35 minutes. La Gomera climate is subtropical oceanic on the coasts, that is, very mild and sunny most of the year, with very mild, spring-like winters and warm, sunny summers; there is also little rainfall, concentrated in the period from October to March. In the interior, the climate varies instead according to altitude and slope exposure: in fact, the slopes exposed to the northeast trade winds receive a moderate amount of rain and are green, while on the southern slopes, the rainfall is scarcer, often below 350 millimeters (13.5 inches) per year, to the point that the island appears to be divided in two, the northern part being verdant and the southern one semi-arid. The prevailing winds, the northeast trade winds, make the northern slope more humid, while they temper the heat along the coasts during summer.
